Interlibrary Loans: ILL

Want to borrow items from another library? This guide will discuss when and how to request items from other libraries via interlibrary loan

What is an interlibrary loan?

If the NLC Library does not have access to an electronic resource that you would like to borrow, you can fill out an interlibrary loan request form. If the item is available from another academic library in Alberta, the NLC Library will request it on your behalf as an interlibrary loan.

Digital loans will be emailed to your NLC email address. Please allow 1-5 days for digital items to arrive in your inbox.

To request an interlibrary loan, fill out the Interlibrary Loan Request Form.

What can be borrowed as an ILL?

Item types that can be requested via interlibrary loan are:

  • Journal Articles
  • 1 Chapter of an eBook
  • 1 Section of an eBook (up to 10% of the book)

Items that cannot be borrowed via interlibrary loan are:

  • entire eBooks
  • reference materials
  • course reserves
  • physical items (books, dvd's, cd's)

How do ILL's work?

Digital loans do not need to be returned. A pdf file will be sent to your NLC email address and, once downloaded, it is yours to keep.

It is the expectation of the NLC Library that digital loans will not be copied or redistributed for any purpose. However, in the case of personal copying for individual study, responsibility for determining whether or not the use may be considered fair is up to the individual.

NLC reproduces, communicates, and lends content in compliance with Canadian copyright guidelines, including the Fair Dealing exception, which can be found here.
